|
Temporary shelter |
Homeless persons and new arrivals are lodged in temporary shelter normally used for a transient population, e.g. low-cost hotels and hostels. |
As income of a region rises, tendency is to increase migration from rural areas and smaller centres. Could engage temporary shelter residents in finding their own solutions, e.g., through self-building. |
|
Temporary construction |
Households assemble their own makeshift shelters with scrap materials they can find at hand or steal from construction sites. |
High risks of disease, fire, and natural disaster; serious environmental problems, but frequently occurs in many developing and some parts of developed countries. Could engage residents in finding their own solutions, e.g., through self-building. |
|
Permanent low-cost construction |
Households, possibly with support from specialty trades build permanent dwellings with immediately available raw materials: adobe, thatch, etc.. |
Many low-cost, low-technology solutions still below "critical mass" in financing, quality assurance, organization of materials and labour, etc. Risks in certain circumstances, e.g., to site services. Could work to improve financing, technology and speed of construction with micro-credit, technical advice, supervision, etc. |
|
Permanent conventional construction |
Builders, possibly with engagement of residents, construct and/or renovate and repair housing using multiple manufactured components. |
Needs established mortgage or other financing systems, quality assurance mechanisms, support for industry innovation. Can result in high-cost housing with many adverse environmental impacts. Could promote lower-impact housing systems and resident practices. |
