City Solutions Network is a subscription-based Website that focuses on essential knowledge and information needs and requests of urban leaders around the world. "Urban leaders" include: mayors of cities and towns, provincial or state governors and ministers concerned with urban issues, senior municipal managers and their advisors, business executives and community leaders. Of course, anyone else is most welcome to subscribe, visit and use the resources here, and also to contribute to its further development. While the Internet can be a tremendous resource for decision-makers, it can also "overload" those with access to it. Often finding the "right" information seems like "looking for a needle in a haystack". Moreover, busy decision-makers may find it hard to determine if what the Internet offers is really applicable to their situation and can be trusted. Since urban leaders have major responsibilities, it is essential for them to base their judgments on reliable knowledge, information and data.

This site focuses on the needs and requests of subscribers. It does not promote a particular ideology, political agenda or partisan viewpoint. It focuses on priority-setting tools for use in situations of scarce time and resources. It stresses field-tested, affordable solutions to practical problems of cities. It encourages consideration of "sustainable" solutions...those likely to be effective, to succeed and to last for a long time. Typically, such solutions take into account economic, environmental, social and political factors in a balanced way. They consider potential risks and opportunities systematically, and respond directly to them.

City Solutions Network also stresses "evidence-based decision-making"... that is making choices based on past concrete results and outcomes, and also on a realistic appraisal of human behaviour in groups. The site may also constructively critique frequently offered solutions which, through experience, have proved to be ineffective.

The pilot version of City Solutions Network is based on years of experience and careful analysis of typical issues facing urban leaders. However, it is a living publication. Subscribers play an essential role in developing additional content, since they, and not its editors, will determine what appears, and what topics are pursued in greater depth.
